“Am due to take possession of this fine steed (well, the non-disc version at least), early next week:
A short run down of the sundries:
- Enve 3.4 Smart System clinchers (black decals)
- Full Campy Super Record (mechanical), with the red flourishes
- Deda Zero 100 Servizio Corse stem (white)
- Deda Presa Carbon bar (white gloss)
I am equivocating over the stock post – to be honest, only for aesthetic reasons, not for performance concerns. I have been riding a C50 for the past 3 years and have never had any issues with the post from a performance or ride quality perspective, so any change to a non-stock post this time around would be purely for aesthetics (probably to opt for white over the stock grey).
My main question for you, sir, relates to the fairly mudane but nonetheless critical ancillaries – saddle colour, tape colour, lever hood colour and, potentially (as mentioned), post colour. I am somewhat at a loss here. I had previously been committed to the ‘Nago set up, as per the website – white saddle, grey tape, white hoods, stock post. Now, I am less sure.
The main configuration that comes to mind is a white post (Deda Super Zero in white), white saddle, white tape and red hoods. Is this too much white, though, and are the red hoods too lurid?
The shop guys are pushing a few black bits – saddle and tape. I’m almost certain that won’t work for me – some of the brighter accents just won’t pop as a consequence of the touch points being such a strong, bleak contrast, especially against the grey background. One thing I am less keen on as D-Day approaches are white hoods, in any case, given the scope for them to become marked and dirty.
Your expert input anxiously awaited.”
Expert input? You’ve been reading the wrong site…!
I reckon stick with the standard post. If that’s a collars & cuffs thing then get a Colnago stem too (I know of places to get one if you get stuck), but actually the standard post works so well with this colourscheme I think it has to be done even if you don’t match the stem. In fact on this bike I almost definitely wouldn’t go for the Deda SuperZero because I think that would introduce too much white.
On the bar tape and saddle, perhaps think less about what might or might not ‘pop’ and more about how it ties in. I actually think black could work well to offer some balance with the black wheels and tyres (please tell me you’re not using coloured tyres?!). I also think a bit of black will harden it up a bit as it is very soft colouring. You might also find with the big black ‘Deda’ logo on the stem that you’re more inclined to look towards black too.
An alternative would be the grey tape (which does look good – Prologo do one that would probably work) with a red saddle and hoods – I personally think that could work quite well (there’s a Ti Crisp coming for this week’s Bike Friday which shows this off rather well).
If it were me I reckon I’d go grey tape, black hoods (I’m not a fan of coloured hoods) and a black or white saddle. Definitely use the standard post though.
Does that help at all, or have I confused you even more?!
